Vaginal progesterone

My Dr. prescribed 37.5 mg progesterone to be inserted vaginally twice a day for heavy bleeding. I'm 51 years old.

I've been on this a week and still bleeding quite heavily. Does the dosage seem correct to you? Please help.

Hi KC I normally recommend 100-200mg/day, but for heavy bleeding I've found 400mg/day or more is needed. Vaginal application is good, but the skin also absorbs it well too. If you do increase the amount, you'll find you will have to use your skin too, as it's impossible to put that amount in the vagina. I also suggest you use it more than twice a day, it keeps levels topped up. Once the bleeding is under control, you can switch back to the twice daily use. If you do increase the amount, please read our page on Oestrogen Dominance, as this often occurs on increasing progesterone. As you're now in Peri-menopause please read through this page too. Heavy bleeding is very common in P-M. Take care Wray
