Trouble sleeping

by Anne
(Danbury, CT)

I have been using the natural progesterone cream for the past 2 yrs.

Because I was having trouble sleeping my daughter gave me a few of her 100mg progesterone pills which improved my sleep better than I have slept for many years.

I asked my gynecologist to prescribe them for me and she has refused, stating that there were sleeping medications she could give me and also there was a potential danger for breast cancer!!!! I will now change my gynecologist, but would like your opinion on this.

Hello,

Are the progesterone pills bioidentical progesterone? If not, then your doctor is right to be unwilling to prescribe them. From all the reading I've done progestin and progestogens can be bad for health.

Hi Anne Normally oral progesterone is the least effective Delivery system. I can only assume the amount of progesterone you were using via the cream was very low, maybe the recommended 20mg/day? Progesterone does help sleep, see here. To date I have found no studies showing progesterone is a danger for breast cancer, in fact the reverse. It's been used successfully for many, please see our page on Cancer and progesterone.
There are many studies on the page you can read, which I hope will reassure you. I'm not sure of your age, but please see these two pages on How to use progesterone cream and Peri-menopause. Or you might of course be in Menopause. If you should think of increasing the amount of cream you've been using, please first read our page on Oestrogen Dominance as this can occur when increasing the amount. Take care Wray
