Surgical Menopause

by Wanda
(Manitoba, Canada)

I had a hysterectomy when I was 42 and am now 45 and just started Premarin 2 weeks ago after failing to get results from any of the "natural" supplements like Black Cohosh, Soy, Evening Primrose etc.. My doc says that I don't need progesterone because I don't have a uterus anymore.

Even with the estrogen, (I had to argue with my doc to get just a small dose!!) (0.3mg) I'm still getting some hot flashes, quick to tears, absolutely no sex drive and even less ambition in life. I've always been very active and now find it a chore just to make a sandwich!

I went on estrogen also because of the supposed benefits to the heart. (My mom has had 2 heart attacks and my dad died of a massive heart attack at age 43.)

Any advice would be welcomed very much. Thanks.

Hi Wanda I can understand you needing relief from the symptoms. The natural supplements you've tried are not very effective, as you've found. But equally HRT is not the way to get relief either. Oestrogen alone, but particularly combined with a progestin, increases the risk of heart disease including strokes, clots and heart attacks. It's such a pity the doctors know so little about progesterone, most of them say we don't need it after a hyst. But the same argument could be applied to oestrogen too! Progesterone plays so many vital roles, not least in ageing, see here, here, here, here and here. Progesterone does help hot flushes, but I've found 400mg/day is needed initially. Then once they have been reduced or have gone, the amount can be slowly lowered till the optimum is found. It would appear both your mother and father, and possibly yourself lack vitamin D. This is vital for the heart, see here and here. You live in Canada which gets little sun, the angle is too oblique to supply much either, see here, here, here and here. Please have a test done, for more info see the Vitamin D council and GrassrootsHealth websites. This is an excellent video too, see here. I'm running out of space so will open a new comment below. Take care Wray

Hi again Wanda If you should consider using progesterone, please read this page we have on Menopause. Please also use sufficient, I recommend 100-200mg/day dependant on symptoms. But before you do please read this page on Oestrogen Dominance first, as this can occur. Take care Wray

Premarin
by: Anonymous

I take 2 mg of estradiol. It works better for me than the 1.25 mg of Premarin. Your health with no estrogen is in danger. Read about it on any of the good sites- like the Merck Manual. I see no need for you to torture yourself. Good luck to you. You can have your life back.
