Men and progesterone

by P
(QC, Canada)

Good morning Wray, I just started using progesterone cream and have put my partner on it to.

I am in perimenopause, therefore I understand that it is fine if I use the cream (1ml/day) starting at day 6 without any adverse consequences. I already felt the benefits of using progesterone cream... what a relief!

About my partner who is 54 years old. He often gets major tiredness and has erectile problems (he has to sometimes take Cialis). He had his hormones tested and was told that everything was fine, however, he was not tested for his thyroid. After reading your site, I thought that maybe he was lacking progesterone and suggested he started, which he did.

My questions are:

1) What is the recommended dose for men?
2) Can he use the cream without stopping? For example, I have to stop during my cycle... what do men do?
3) Yesterday, we both used the cream on our chest and got a funny taste in the mouth for the entire day. Is it a side effect of using the cream?
4) How long should he use the cream?
5) Any other advice/recommendations?

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions. Sincerely.

Hi P. Pleased the cream is helping you. We often go through oestrogen dominance, you're lucky as it can be awful! It didn't happen to me either. 1ml seems very low, I normally recommend 100-200mg/day. I'm not sure how much progesterone you're getting in your 1ml. You can use it daily if you prefer. Peri-menopause is a difficult time, with erratic periods etc. You might like to read about it here. Pleased your partner is using it! I hope with time he won't need the Cialis. Progesterone stimulates nitric oxide, a vasodilator essential for erections. Get him to avoid all sugar and starchy food, this causes tiredness and affects sexual function. He might have insulin resistance, please see here. And these papers...

Dose is hard to define, I prefer to go by symptoms. I suggest he starts on 20mg/day, he might need more initially. One man is using 100mg/day, so see how he gets on. He can use the cream daily, men make progesterone every day, we do too, albeit in very small amounts in the follicular phase. How interesting you had the funny taste, you're the second person to mention it in the 14 years I've been advising. I believe it's due to adenosine, a nucleoside which is part of the energy molecule ATP. One of the side affects of administering adenosine is a metallic taste in the mouth. One study found that progesterone increases the release of adenosine. It's difficult to say how long he should use the cream. I for one will never stop using it! It's beneficial for ageing for instance, see these papers...

The only other advice I can think of is please see this page on oestrogen dominance. And be patient, it can take 3-6 months for the full affect to be felt. If you are not getting a response increase the amount you're using. Take care, Wray
