Goin crazy with Progesterone

by Tracy

Hi Wray, I started writing you and before I finished I pushed the button.. I will start again.. After doing a blood test to check my levels I had Prog and dhea and estradiol checked. Blood test in Nov 2010 came out...

Estradiol= 29 pg/ml
Dhea= 290 ng/dl
Prog= 0.8 ng/ml

I thought that maybe I should use more prog since my number looked low. (But as I see now per the lab, there normal range for Post Meno women is <0.5 I was at 0.8) I guess I didn't need anymore. Oh well anyway I started applying Prometrium 100 mg (Pricking the capsule and applying it on my skin)Thinking getting it on my skin would absorb better and I would get most of it in my body I would use 100mg a day. Sometimes more. I started getting quite a bit of hair on my face I decided to have a saliva test done. Oh my gosh. My numbers came back at 19,000 on Prog. My estradiol came back at 1.2 pg/ml. I immediately stopped putting the prometrium on and its been 3 weeks with none.

My testosterone number was high also. Like the prog. was converting to test. I have been doing progesterone cremes for about 12 years.. Ever since my peri years.. I am now 53 and wondering if I need to do this anymore.. How long will it take to clear my body of this prog. so that I can maybe start over on a lower more normal dose (Not Prometrium anymore) and not get crazy with it again. Do I then add some small amount of estrgen to balance it or not??? Maybe the transdermal way is not for me anymore.. How about sublingual drops?? Let me know your thoughts.. Wray I think I wrote this in the wrong area. I don't mind you posting this but I really just want your opinion and so you don't have to post it. As always I value your opinion. Thanks.

Goin crazy with Progesterone
by: Wray

Hi Tracy The reason for the hair growth was an increase in testosterone levels. Women make more testosterone each month than oestrogen. But most of it is converted by the enzyme aromatase into oestrogen. Progesterone, by stimulating oestrogen, would of necessity have also caused an increase in testosterone levels. This does reduce, as does the oestrogen, if sufficient progesterone is used. I recommend 100-200mg/day, which can show as high levels if a saliva test is done. In fact levels between 10,000 to 100,000 pg/ml have been found before, with no harm done, see here. Incidentally if a blood test were performed at the same time as the saliva test, the progesterone shows an increase of about 4, from 0.5 to 2-3 ng/ml. Which is lower than the normal range for the luteal phase, ie 5 to 20 ng/ml, see Medline Progesterone It's entirely up to you if you wish to continue, but looking at the ratio of your progesterone to oestrogen in Nov 2010, it was very low at 27:1. From Saliva Tests we run, we've found to feel well a ratio of 600:1 and over is best. Unfortunately I don't know how long it takes for progesterone to clear, as we are all so different. The best Delivery systems are injections, suppositories or creams, I don't recommend sub lingual drops. As I don't recommend oestrogen either, please see our page on HRT. Progesterone is helpful for ageing too, see here, here, here, here and here. Take care Wray

Oral Progesterone

Is oral progesterone in a capsule effective if one opens the capsule & uses it sublingually?

Oral Progesterone
by: Wray

Hi Nikki It would be slightly better, but some will still get swallowed. It would be more effective if the contents were added to a small amount of cream, and that was applied to the skin. Take care Wray

promethium and cream
by: Sabine

As you know, most insurance won't pay for progesterone cream. My doc gave me a prescription anyway, and I have been using it. I stopped for a year or two (and was probably never using enough). I recently started again, 50mg in the morning and 50 at night. Recently, my doc gave me a prescription for generic prometrium (100mg). I tried it, at night, but it didn't help with sleep the way the cream does. I tried it in the morning, but it doesn't help my mood the way the cream does. I did try opening the capsules and using it topically and it worked great.
My question, which I think I know the answer to, is: can I safely combine the two, at least for now. I'd like to keep doing 1 pill, topically, in the morning, and 50mg compounded cream at night.
Then, once the cream has run out, I'd like to do one pill in the morning and one pill at night (topically).
Will that be okay? Again, for insurance reasons, $5.00USD versus $40.00USD a month.
I'm 50. Blood work shows me to be menopausal. My period comes and goes. My primary symptoms are insomnia, dizziness, and irritability.
Thanks!
