Duphaston

Hi Wray
Iam 9th of pregnant now and this is my first pregnancy.From 4th wk my Doc adviced to take Progesterone 200 mg till 8th wk.After 8 wks i went to check up..Baby hear beat is fine.Again my doctor adviced me take Duphaston 10 mg twice daily for 1 month.Is it safe to use ?
Please Advice.

Hi Chinni Progesterone is excellent, but I would never recommend Duphaston. It contains dydrogesterone, a synthetic progestin. But because it's a progestin, it's not broken down into the normal progesterone metabolites. This is something which is never taken into account by doctors prescribing progestins. The metabolites are as important as progesterone itself. In particular allopregnanolone, a potent analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic. For more info on progestins see here.

We do have a page on Pregnancy you can look through, plus this one here. Another progestin they might offer is 17 OHP caproate (17-OHP C), often given for pregnancy problems. I would always favour the use of progesterone. There is no evidence to date of any adverse side effects to the foetus while using progesterone during pregnancy, and it's more potent that 17-OHP-C, which also has safety concerns about it's use, see here. I can never understand why they don't just stick with progesterone, it's cheap and readily available. But more importantly there's no risk to the foetus. Take care Wray
