Dosage of progesterone for anxiety

by Bev
(SA)

I had a hysterectomy a year ago and have been on 1/2 to 1/4 teaspoon progesterone cream, twice a day. No other hormones, only supplements. I am post menopausal and still have ovaries( which I assume are not working anyway). This dosage has been good, but I have been under extreme stress for the past few weeks, and my anxiety has gotten bad. I am also waking at 2-3am every morning, feeling nervous, anxious and depressed.

What should I increase my dosage to in order to help the anxiety? I am not sure what the % cream is that I use because it only states 2000mg on the jar.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hi Bev

I am not sure what cream you are using, but that is not enough progesterone. Usually, between 100-200mg is needed each day using a good organic cream such as Natpro, which is a 3% cream and was formulated over 30 years ago. Use half in the morning and the other half at night. You will have to experiment to see what suits you and your adverse symptoms best. Anxiety usually requires more. Once things have improved, the amount can be reduced to a level that suits you, but never less than 100mg (3ml) per day. Please read the How to use Progesterone Cream page. Please also be aware of Estrogen Dominance symptoms, which you will experience as you haven't been using enough progesterone.

Stress destroys progesterone levels as well as nutrients. More needs to be taken during stressful times. Some of the calming nutrients mentioned on the anxiety page will help you.

Your adrenals are taking strain, which affects cortisol levels, affecting your sleep. Progesterone, which is a calming hormone, will help if used correctly. The Adrenal Fatigue Cocktail may also help you, it has helped many, including myself, with this problem. Google it for the recipe.

What is your Vitamin D3 level? A deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone. It should be optimal as it is connected to every single functioning cell in our bodies, including anxiety. Cofactors are equally vital when taking D3.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks so much, Joy. I am using a make called Naturone, which we get here in SA. I appreciate you giving me the ml dosage- I can now see why I am underdosing.

I will definitely try the adrenal cocktail. Ironically I took the recipe off here, bought the ingredients, and gave it to my husband when he was stressed, yet I haven't had it myself!

I have been taking a Vit D3 and K2 supplement(1000IU) daily for a few years, but haven't had my levels tested.

Hi Bev

I did wonder if you were from South Africa when I saw SA, but then I thought perhaps South Australia. I am surprised that you haven't been advised correctly on how to use progesterone.

I also live in SA, Cape Town actually. You are most welcome to contact me via my website, see here.

Take care.
