Can I use progesterone before I get pregnant?

by Cy
(UK)

I have discussed progesterone deficiency with my gynaecologist and he says I should start using it from 6 weeks after my pregnancy has been confirmed by a scan, but from experience you may loss the pregnancy even before the scan at 6 weeks. So, is it advisable for me to start the therapy before before or after ovulation?

Can I use progesterone before I get pregnant?

HI Cy. If you have a progesterone deficiency then it is advisable to use it before pregnancy, and certainly during the first six weeks. Miscarriages occur more frequently during this period than at any other time. In fact it's the first 8 weeks which are the critical period.

If you do use it and all goes well, it is safe to use for the entire pregnancy, but if you wish to stop it please do so very gradually, over at least a month. We do have a web page on pregnancy and progesterone, please have a look at it:

Take care Wray
