I started having irregular periods and heavy bleeding every other week with clotting for 2 years and then didn't have a period in 6 months but started having hot flashes and vaginal dryness..I started taking progesterone cream and it stopped the symptoms but now I have heavy bleeding again with clotting. Do I stop the progesterone?

Hi Tonya You don't give your age, but it appears you're now in Peri-menopause. You haven't said how much progesterone you're using or when you started it, so I'm going to take a guess. If you've only recently started it, and you're using a low amount, symptoms can be helped initially, but then Oestrogen Dominance sets in. This is because progesterone stimulates oestrogen. If you started it a few weeks ago, it can still occur if low amounts are used. I recommend 100-200mg/day, but for heavy bleeding 400mg/day is needed, sometimes more. It's also necessary to take at least 2000mg/day NAC (N-acetyl cysteine), 2000mg/day taurine and at least 5000iu per day vitamin D. The NAC inhibits the MMPs which cause the lining to break down, there's more info about this on our Menstruation page. Low levels of taurine are found in dysfunctional uterine bleeding, see here. And vitamin D stops inflammation, plus it's vital for the normal functioning of all cells. Progesterone suppresses the excess oestrogen causing the lining to build up. All four of the above are potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Please have a vitamin D test done. For more info on vitamin D levels, test kits etc see the Vitamin D Council, GrassrootsHealth and Birmingham Hospital. Blood levels should be 70-100ng/ml (175-250nmol/L) and not the 30ng/ml (75nmol/L) most labs and doctors regard as adequate. The minimum daily dose should be 5000iu's per day, although recent research indicates it should be 10,000iu's per day, see here. As you are in P-M with an erratic cycle, please use the progesterone daily, it's impossible to follow a cycle now. Take care Wray
