Severe hair loss after taking progesterone cream!

by Kiya
(USA)

My question is that after I started taking progesterone cream my hair began falling out a WHOLE lot and has continued now for going on a year.

Is this normal, why is it happening, will it ever stop and is there anything that I can do or take to get it stabilized with re-growth? This cream has really helped me with my all of my symptoms, fatigue, irregular periods, mental fogginess etc. but the hair loss has been an extremely devastating symptom for me. I'm confused as to why my hairloss started after taking something so helpful.

Severe hair loss after taking progesterone cream!

Hi Kiya. I'm so pleased the progesterone helped with all your symptoms. It is puzzling about the hair loss, but progesterone has a paradoxical side. Initially it's stimulatory, but once the level builds things calm down. I don't know how much you're using, obviously enough to help in other areas, but not in this. It's the androgens which cause hair loss, plus stress. It could be you're not using enough progesterone, and I can only suggest you increase the amount slowly to see if it helps. I would also suggest you take 2000-4000mg/day inositol, often called the anti-alopecia vitamin. Plus 1000-2000mg/day N-acetyl cysteine, the hair, nails and skin comprise about 14% cysteine. It makes the difference between whether these are strong or weak. Take care, Wray

My mother is 76 yrs old and has lost over half her hair. It is very sad. She does not go to doctors. Seems very healthy. I just wonder if she has a progesterone problem. I also wonder if this cream would be safe and would it work for her?

Hi there Progesterone is safe for all ages. They give it to new born babies with respiratory distress syndrome, as it helps the tiny lungs develop. Studies have also found it excellent for ageing, including Alzheimer's. Please see here and here.
And here. It's difficult to know if it would help your mother, hair loss can be due to ageing, excess testosterone which I doubt your mother has or stress. If she is stressed progesterone does help calm us. Only by using it would you know, as it won't harm and it is beneficial, it might be worth a try. If she does please ask her to read this web page here. Take care Wray

Hair loss after starting Progesterone

Hi, it is a known fact that any type of Progesterone natural or synthetic does indeed oppose or "Block" the effects of estradiol the estrogen of youth through out the body . Before my mother went into menopause she had abundant hair and as long as she only used progesterone occasionally and used a natural bio identical 17 beta estradiol she was fine and so was her hair and emotions and her weight . When she stopped the estradiol and just used the Progesterone almost every day she lost more than half of her hair gained about 40 pounds over a couple of years. I told her to stop the Progesterone and after a few weeks the hair loss slowed right down and her food consumption went down to normal. Often times Progesterone will give woman a run away appetite since after all it is a "pro gest ation" hormone favoring pregnancy it's an immune suppressant that prevents the body from miss carrying or rejecting the fetus. Estradiol on the other hand causes growth it is responsible for over 400 functions in the body . It should be recognized as of equal value in a woman's health where advisable .

maybe this will help

Having all of your hormones checked might be what needs to be done. I have heard that if a woman's testosterone levels are too high that this will cause hair loss... much like a man... good luck! I have seen amazing results using natural progesterone cream. It seems to be helping me with ALL of my symptoms and I have only been using it for about three months. I have, however, played with different amounts to find how much I need that works for me. GOOD LUCK !

Severe hair loss after taking progesterone cream!

Hi there Unfortunately progesterone does have a stimulatory affect initially. But if enough is used it then becomes the dominant hormone and things calm down. Equally unfortunately oestrogen is a mitogen so causing cells to divide and multiply, including fat cells. It also causes water retention, this is the reason your mother gained weight, and not the progesterone. In fact progesterone is such an excellent diuretic it's now being given via IV transfusion to brain trauma victims, please see here. The amount she was using was causing permanent oestrogen stimulation, plus the fact she was using oestrogen too. By stopping the progesterone this stimulatory affect would have stopped too. Progesterone stabilises blood glucose and prevents cravings, as evidenced by the drop in progesterone at the end of a women's cycle. Many women get cravings the few days before their period. This can be prevented by using enough progesterone, at least 100-200mg/day. Progesterone is also excellent for encouraging hair growth, as seen in pregnant women who generally find their hair is wonderful. Oestrogen is essential, but it does have a darker side. Being a mitogen it stimulates cancer cells to divide and multiply too. Your mother might like to read these papers here. Take care Wray

Hair Loss Shampoo

Hi StacyP Unfortunately it contains some ingredients which I certainly wouldn't use. Ketoconazole gets a 5 hazard rating on the EWG site, please see here. Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate gets a 3 hazard rating. It also contains PEG solvents/emulsifiers/surfactants which have a possiblility of containing 1,4 dioxane. This is what EWG have to say about it... "About 1,4-DIOXANE: The carcinogen 1,4-dioxane contaminates up to 46% of personal care products tested (OCA 2008, EWG 2008). The chemical is an unwanted byproduct of an ingredient processing method called ethoxylation used to reduce the risk of skin irritation for petroleum-based ingredients. Though 1,4-dioxane can easily be removed from products before they are sold, its widespread presence in products indicates that many manufacturers fail to take this simple step." Please see EWG. It also contains the preservative phenoxyethanol which has been banned by Ecocert for use in natural and organic skin care products. Take care Wray

Hair loss and progesterone
by: Isabelle

Progesterone cream makes my hair fall out period. even a diminute amount on my wrist will start the shedding of my hair that takes from a week to two weeks to stop, after I use a little bit of that insignificant amount of progesterone (for 1 day).

I lost so much hair already, I have the sweats and hot flashes and I still will not use progesterone, I fear, I will end up bold in no time. So yes progesterone makes your hair fall out, I don't know why, but it does.

Stimulates Estrogen

Isn't the reason that hair falls out when using Progesterone because initially estrogen production is increased??? Thus increasing the dose of Progesterone and giving it some time will solve the problem? Also I thought that Progesterone would stop hair loss when everything gets balanced properly?

My daughter who is 37 and myself 54 both have extensive hair breakage and hair loss when we use a progesterone cream.. Thank God, I recently found a real doctor that believes in bio-identical hormones like Suzanne Somers talks about. In fact today I am collecting my saliva in tubes to be tested by a lab to find out my hormone levels.. I am praying my daughter can get insurance, (She won't get obamacare thank God!)with this new job she has applied for so she can go to this new doctor as well. He is the only medical Dr./Gynecologist in the North East that does this..
