Progesterone and Orgasms?

by Roger
(Kansas City)

Hi, I'm a 50 year old healthy male who started taking between 40-50 mg of progesterone (Source Naturals brand, 500 mg per ounce, 22 mg per 1/4 tsp) twice daily in order to help bring down my slightly high diastolic blood pressure and decrease moderate bph symptoms (primarily having a hard time starting to urinate and often not completely emptying my bladder). I've been taking the progesterone for about two months now.

So far my diastolic blood pressure has come down about 10 points, and is usually between 115-120 now. So that's good. I've also noticed improved blood flow to my penis and scrotum and firmer erections. So that's good too. However, I haven't noticed much improvement with the bph symptoms yet. They are about the same as before. So I'm not sure if that will just take more time or what. Any ideas?

I have experienced one negative side effect from the progesterone use though. While having sexual intercourse I have much less sensitivity in my penis and it's difficult to reach orgasm. I eventually do reach orgasm, but it takes some concentration and much longer than it used to. The orgasms also don't feel as good at they used to. Any idea what's causing this? Am I taking too much progesterone? Or not enough? Or should I stop taking it altogether?

I appreciate any insight or suggestions you might have.

Hi Roger

I am so pleased to hear that your blood pressure etc has improved with progesterone therapy. Whilst Source Naturals contains a good amount of progesterone concentration, please take note of the other ingredients, some of them are parabens, not what we recommend. Progesterone therapy is not an overnight fix for both men and women, it does take time. Please read Progesterone for Men, it may help you as well as Estrogen Dominance, men suffer just as much as women do.

Whilst I have no answers for your sensitive penis etc, I am hoping that David G Mills will pick up on this post and help you. He has been using progesterone for a long time now with great success. You are not using too much progesterone, so please do not worry about that. I suggest you keep with the amount used and see how you go, you may need to increase slightly, but give it some time please.

Do you know what your Vitamin D3 level is, a deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone.

I hope this has been of some help to you.

Progesterone and Orgasms?

Hi Joy,

Thank you for the response. I've been busy for the past couple of weeks, and only just now saw it.

I plan to purchase a tube of Natpro once my supply of Source Naturals progesterone runs low. So I'll see if it makes any difference. But I'm confused as to which ingredients in the Source Naturals brand are parabens? The ingredients are listed as:

"Deionized Water, Aloe Vera Leaf Gel, Cetearyl Glucoside, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Natural Progesterone USP from soy (500 mg per ounce), Wild Yam Root Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Natural Vitamin E), Lecithin Phospholipid, Glyceryl Stearate and PEG-100 Stearate, Jojoba Seed Oil, Squalene, Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Stearic Acid, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Ginseng Seed Extract, Ginseng Root Extract, Sorbic Acid, Xanthan Gum, and Rosemary Oil."

I suppose the lower sensitivity in my penis while having sexual intercourse could be viewed as a good thing. I'll never be accused of being a "minute man!" ;-) And it's not as if I can't reach climax. It just takes longer and usually well after my wife has climaxed. I've also noticed that the amount of ejaculate has increased since I've started using progesterone. I'm not sure if that's a usual result or not.

My Vit-D levels are very good. My last blood test showed a blood level of 58. If I remember correctly I was taking 5,000 iu per day of Vit-D3 at the time, and I increased it to 5,000 iu twice per day since. So I should be well over that level now. I'll have it rechecked when I get my physical next Spring.

Hi Roger

Please let us know how you get on with Natpro when you do try it. Grapefruit seed extract can contain parabens and should be avoided. Your Vitamin D3 level is a little low, it should be 70-100. May I suggest that you take 10 000iu’s for 3 months, then drop back down to 5 000iu’s.

Take care.
