Menopause and progesterone

by Kerry Cruz
(Oahu, Hawaii)

Hi. I am going through, and praying quickly, menopause. And I am hypothyroid as well. The worst! Anyway my doctor just put me on progesterone which I take before bed. It’s been going well the first few nights, however after I took it last night I had really bad anxiety. Is that normal while hormones are balancing?

Hi Kerry

Oh dear, I do wish that doctors did their research on progesterone. Any form of oral progesterone is not the best delivery method as around 96% gets destroyed by the gut and liver, see here. The amount that you are getting is merely aggravating your estrogen receptors making your Estrogen Dominance symptoms worse. It would also add to your Anxiety. This is not what you need in Menopause.

Please consider using a good organic progesterone cream such as Natpro which is a 3% cream and was formulated over 30 years ago. Usually between 100-200mg per day, every day with no breaks is needed. Use half the amount in the morning, the other half at night. Never use progesterone once a day as this causes levels to spike. Please read the How to use Progesterone Cream page.

Vitamin D3 is vital. A deficiency reduces the benefits of progesterone, levels should be optimal at all times. It is also connected to every single functioning cell in our bodies making it so important. Hypothyroidism is often due to a lack of vitamin D3.

Thank you. I just ordered Natpro and I am stopping the Oral capsules and will let my doctor know. Not only did it increase my anxiety but I have been having headaches everyday since taking the capsules.
