Can I use the cream alongside the pill?

by Simmyg

I am 49 and am on Loestrin 20 to control my heavy periods and a few other symptoms.

I saw my doctor today to ask about progesterone cream as an alternative or a supplement and it was dismissed out of hand. I explained all the research I had done and she did not want to know. Please tell me can I use the cream alongside the pill? What is your advice?

Desperate.

Can I use the cream alongside the pill?

Hi Simmyg. Yes you can use progesterone with the pill, but I don't believe you need the pill. It is merely filling you with synthetic oestrogen and progestins, please see here. Progesterone is excellent at controlling, even stopping heavy continual bleeding. Please see these...

You are now in peri-menopause when periods become very erratic and bleeding varying from spotting to flooding, please see here. There is little we can do to prevent the erratic cycles, as the ovaries are slowing down, but plenty we can do to help other symptoms. Excess oestrogen causes the lining of the uterus to build up, but with little progesterone present, bleeding can be heavy and continual. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP?s) are enzymes that break down protein. They play a role in the breakdown of endometrial tissues at the end of the menstrual cycle. If they are over active, as would be the case with an excess of oestrogen in the body, (oestrogen stimulates it?s production), the result is a pathological reaction such as inflammation. This can lead to both rheumatoid and osteo-arthritis, cirrhosis, cancer and excessive bleeding in the uterus. Progesterone suppresses matrix metalloproteinases. Please see here. And
here. And here. Take care, Wray
