Weight Gain and sluggish at 60

by Linda C.

Hi there,

I just turned 60yo and have a really hard time losing the weight. My energy is not great either. I tend to crave fattening things and am insulin resistant as. I take 20mg of Natural Progeste Cream (by Metabolic Maintenance) in the evening, which helps me sleep. However, if I try to take a full pump in the morning, I am so tired throughout the day and feel useless. If I take 40mg in the evening, I am also very sluggish and feel like my heart and circulation are slowing down. Need my energy back and getting very discouraged. I also take Iodine once in a while as well. Please advise. Giving up hope!
Thanks.
Linda C.

Hi Linda C

Menopause is such a disruptive time in our lives. Insulin Resistance often appears at this time. Unfortunately you are not using progesterone correctly. Usually between 100-200mg is required using a good organic cream such as Natpro which is a 3% cream. Progesterone therapy will disrupt things in the beginning, time and patience is needed.

It should be used no less than twice a day, half in the morning and the other half at night. If you find that the morning dose affects you then split it up and use during the day. Using once a day spikes progesterone levels which is not what you need. It can take 2-6 months for the body to adjust to progesterone therapy, longer if symptoms are severe.

Using the search bar, you might like to look up How to use Progesterone Cream, Estrogen Dominance and Insulin Resistance.

Best wishes.

Cortisol

Hi Linda C

Progesterone needs to be used no less than twice a day as explained. This will prevent progesterone levels from spiking. You will have to persevere until your body adjusts.

I don't know how progesterone can disrupt cortisol, other than to inhibit it. Too much cortisol is not a good thing either, so as far as I'm concerned this inhibition is an advantage. When stressed the adrenals produce cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline. But to produce cortisol, the adrenals first have to produce progesterone, this then convert to cortisol. If very stressed the adrenals can't cope with the amount of progesterone needed for the conversion, so they rob other sources, notably from the ovaries. This is the reason stress drops progesterone levels, and the reason stress upsets the reproductive system. In fact stress can stop ovulation, but without ovulation, no ovarian progesterone is made. So a vicious cycle starts. Progesterone is also very calming, as it activates the GABA receptor sites, GABA is one of our most calming neurotransmitters. By so doing, progesterone lessens the stress response, which of course helps the adrenals! One way of finding out if you have dermal fatigue, is by doing what I do and use substantially more.

If your adrenals are stressed try this adrenal fatigue cocktail .....

ADRENAL FATIGUE COCKTAIL
* 125ml Orange Juice or *Grapefruit Juice, you are looking for vitamin C
* 1/4 teaspoon Celtic Sea Salt or pink Himalayan
* 1/4 teaspoon Cream of Tartar

Mix the above at the start of the day with enough liquid for two (2) applications i.e. 8oz/125ml of orange juice. Drink it mid-morning, as well as mid-afternoon. In addition, any time that you are feeling particularly anxious it would be advisable to prepare another mixture and take it.

PLEASE NOTE: * Grapefruit/juice can affect some people. It can cause interactions with many medications. Before drinking grapefruit juice one should consult a doctor. Essentially, grapefruit juice can block the action of intestinal CYP3A4, so instead of being metabolised, more of the drug enters the blood and stays in the body longer; this can be dangerous. Please always read inserts of your medication. For those who have blood sugar problems, use lemon juice mixed with a little water, you are looking for vitamin C.
