Progesterone or Pregnancy

by Julie R
(Pennsylvania, USA)

My doctor is considering putting me on progesterone each cycle after I ovulate, since I had a previous miscarriage and am trying to get pregnant. My levels during unmedicated cycles never went above an 8.9.

Since progesterone mimics the symptoms of pregnancy, is there any way to tell if I am pregnant without having to wait until a late period? I'm just concerned I'll feel pregnant for weeks and then find out it was only the progesterone (which could be very disappointing, obviously).

Thank you.

Progesterone or Pregnancy

Hi Julie When first starting progesterone it can mimic the symptoms of pregnancy, ie sore breasts, nausea, water retention etc. These are all caused by progesterone initially ramping up oestrogen. The same symptoms occur if using progesterone and the amount is increased. There's more info about this on our Oestrogen Dominance page. We also have info on how to use progesterone prior to conception and pregnancy on our Pregnancy page. Please read through this, as it explains the ins and outs of using supplemental progesterone. Take care Wray
