Anxiety and panic right before my period while taking progesterone

by Tanya
(Wisconsin)

I am on 50 mg of compounded progesterone orally from day 14 today 28 of my cycle. I am on my 23rd day and I'm feeling horrible! I was feeling great up until this point! Should I reduce or stop my progesterone until my period comes on day 28? I am not sure if what I am experiencing is estrogen dominance or too much progesterone at this time of my cycle.

Anxiety and panic right before my period while taking progesterone

Hi Tanya Unfortunately oral progesterone is the least effective Delivery system, as most gets destroyed in the gut and liver leaving very little to help......"The liver and gut region removed a mean of 96 per cent of the progesterone entering these tissues" see here. You are also not taking a very high dose, which would only make matters worse. I recommend 100-200mg/day, or more dependant on symptoms, and in a form which is absorbed well. I suggest you open the capsules, add the contents to a small amount of cream and rub that on your skin. That way you will get the full benefit of the progesterone, see here. I feel you'll probably need 200mg/day to overcome the adverse symptoms you now have. Oestrogen rises mid-luteal phase, and if progesterone levels are not high enough, adverse symptoms can occur. If this should happen again, increase the amount for those few days prior to bleeding. We have more info on our page How to use progesterone cream, and please read our page on Oestrogen Dominance too. Take care Wray
