10th concussion

by Michelle
(California)

My daughter played volleyball at the highest collegiate level. She suffered her first set of concussions at 15. Back then there was very little information on what to do. Neurologist would diagnose then adios with RX of cognitive and physical rest.

Fast forward 10 years and she has suffered a total of 10 concussions from sport, coaching and an unfortunate accident. I have used high dose fish oil, antioxidants to dampen inflammation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, neurofeedback, photobiomodulation, float tank therapy and chiropractic care to treat all of her post concussive symptoms.

She slipped down stairs yesterday and hit her head on the wall- she is currently 3 months out from being smashed in the head with a volleyball and was just starting to feel better. This is so depressing being sent back to square one. I remembered hearing JJVirgin discuss using progesterone on her brain injured child and I began the search for info.

What dosage would be appropriate for a female? I gave her 100mg of oral progesterone 22 hrs post injury. How much and for how long should I continue? I can only read so many PubMed studies looking for dosing etc.. before I lose it.

Thank you for any advice you can give!

Hi Michelle

I am sorry to hear about your daughter's concussion.

Progesterone has been used very successfully with TBI patients so I see no reason why it will not help your daughter if used correctly. Please take note of nutrients that may also help.

Unfortunately oral progesterone is not the best Delivery Method as about 96% gets destroyed by the gut and liver. This will only aggravate estrogen receptors and make adverse symptoms worse which is not what you need. I just can't understand why doctors don't understand this. Please consider using a good quality progesterone cream such as Natpro. You will note on the TBI page that a high dose of progesterone is needed. I am not sure how much your daughter will need, this is something that you will have to experiment with but I suggest starting with 200mg progesterone cream per day, use half the amount in the morning and the other half at night and see how you get on. Never use just once a day as progesterone levels need to be stable. This will probably disrupt your daughter's monthly cycle, but the body will soon adjust. Please read the How to use Progesterone Cream and Estrogen Dominance pages.

She has been taking 200mg in split doses and feels fantastic. I will say this is the fastest she has ever recovered from any of her concussions. I’m a believer!

Hi Michelle

Oh I am delighted to hear that your daughter is finding relief from progesterone. If progesterone is used correctly it's a winner. Sadly there is a lot of misinformation out there which in turn leads to great confusion and disbelief.

Please also be aware that there are many things that could cause progesterone levels to drop, stress being one of them. If stressed, use more cream to get over the stressful period. Once the stress in under control then reduce back down again.

Many thanks for trusting and believing in the advice given on this website.
